Here’s how we configure HP Integrated Lights-Out (HP iLO) in an HP Proliant servers. For this tutorial, i am using an HP DL585 G7 iLO 3, firmware version 1.28. The HP iLO allows you to perform remote management including starting up and shutting the server down. The iLO management processor is accessible and operational the moment power is passed on to the server.
There are 2 ways of configuring iLO in an HP Server.
- Using the HP Integrated Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility (requires you to be physically with the server)
- Using the HP Integrated Lights-Out BIOS (can configure from remote, but requires that NIC cable plugged into the iLO port)
Setup and configure iLO from Windows using the HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility
- Open the utility from Start>All Programs>HP System Tools>HP Integrated Lights-Out Config Utility
- Go to Network>Standard Settings:
- Disable DHCP recommended, assign the IP address, gateway and subnet as per your requirements.
- Go under users to add/remove users.
- Save and exit the utility
Configure iLO using the HP Integrated Lights-Out BIOS (iLO bios/rbsu):
- Power ON the server
- Press F8 on POST when the message comes up to configure iLO
Note: On G7 servers (and maybe on G6 servers), depending on settings in RBSU, sometimes these messages are hidden and you will not see them during POST. To see all the POST messages, make sure you “press a key” when you get the message “PRESS ANY KEY TO VIEW OPTION ROM MESSAGES” at the bottom of the screen during POST. - It will take you to the iLO BIOS. Perform the configuration as under
Go to Network>DNS/DHCP:
Disable DHCP recommended so you can assign a fix IP address for ILO
Next, got to Network>NIC and TCP/IP and assign the IP Address, Subnet Mask and the Gateway IP Address:
If you also want to assign a user, you may go to Users section:
And just in case you wanted to disable iLO functionality for whatever reason, you may do so by going into Settings>Configure and choose DISABLED under iLO Functionality.
Disabling iLO3 ROM Based Setup Utility will disable the iLO BIOS.
Require iLO 3 RBSU Login will prompt you for iLO Username and Password each time you log into iLO BIOS
Show iLO 3 IP address will display IP address on the screen during POST
Local User is for Users saved in the iLO management chipset

Now press F10 to save and exit the iLO BIOS
To Access iLO Webpage
- Open a web browser (Firefox, IE) and on the URL bar type in the IP address of the iLO
- At the login prompt, put in the user name and password you created or the default is located on the tag tied to the server.
